I got to go to a special opening of an exhibition on Alvar Aalto at the Pinakothek der Moderne. They had wine, and I hadn´t eaten in a few hours so I only had one glass, and even that was enough.
Alvar Aalto is a Finnish architect who established the Finnish Institute of Architecture. A majority of his designs have organic features and natural aspects, namely the use of local and natural materials. He believed that after the war the Finnish should retreat to their "natural state" and designed for the user of the space. He is probably Galen Cranz´s favourite architect.
His drawings are absolutely beautiful; the only other person Ive seen with such amazing drawings is John Lambert Pearson. They had photos of details of his built work and the photographer was phenomenal, but so were his subjects. The photos portrayed the wide variety of materials that he used in his work including tile, wood, glass, you name it. And the materials he used were not always arranged in regular patters, in fact in some of his designs they actually came off the wall, evoking various natural occurences such as rippling waves or hills.
One of his most famous buildings is his Experimental House which he built with his second wife, Elissa, on the island of Muuratsalo.He designed mostly in Finland, but also had influential designs in Germany as well, including the Aalto Theatre House in Essen.
